The elephant weighed just 5000 kgs at the time of its freedom and after reaching Mathura, Raju felt like home but when it was still there and people were trying to rescue, it cried after resisting.  Though elephants are highly intelligent species yet the years of abuse had taken its toll and it took some time to understand fully that it had been rescued and finally set free.
